The next series of the well-known video game series “Tomb Raider” will be published by Amazon, representing a triumph for the tech giant’s video game division. This is positioned as the company’s defining moment because it bravely managed to survive, unlike Google, which shut down its gaming service’s internal game production division, Stadia, in 2022.
Lara Croft, a British archaeologist who explores undiscovered tombs worldwide while solving riddles and battling bad guys, appears in the action-adventure game Tomb Raider, created by the California video game studio Crystal Dynamics.
“It’s a huge moment for us,” Christoph Hartmann, the vice president of Amazon Games, said in an interview. “If someone told you four years ago Amazon is making games, you would have laughed.”
Google, which has previously entered the video game industry, shut down Stadia’s internal game production division in 2021 before announcing this year that the entire service would be discontinued. Some others believed that Amazon and its plans for video games might suffer a similar fate.
But Amazon eventually produced the well-liked multiplayer game “New World” last fall, and this spring, they launched the similarly well-liked game “Lost Ark.”
Tomb Raider will be the first major single-player game to be published by Amazon
The following “Tomb Raider” game will mark Amazon Games’ first significant single-player release. Amazon Games spent years trying to break into the competitive, isolating world of game production before finally finding success with multiplayer online games.
Adding a single-player flagship game to Amazon’s catalog might be a big move and improve its reputation in the market. The game is still in its early stages of development, and a release date is not yet set. The most recent episode will feature exploration, puzzle-solving, and confrontational engagements with adversaries. It is planned to be a multi-platform single-player narrative adventure.
The Japanese business Square Enix released the popular 2018 game “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” and more recent iterations of the game. The franchise has influenced multiple feature films.
The new game, which is currently in the early stages of development and does not yet have a release date, is still being created by Crystal Dynamics. However, Amazon will serve as the title’s publisher, which means that it is closely collaborating with Crystal Dynamics on “creative assistance” and is in charge of duties like marketing, distributing the book across different retail and online channels, and advertising.
Though Amazon is a late entrant into video games and trails other deep-pocketed companies like Microsoft, Hartmann says he thinks the time is on his side because he is just one part of a larger company that is patient and not asking for immediate financial success.
